Claude Cowork is Anthropic's desktop-native, autonomous AI agent, currently available as a research preview for Claude Max subscribers on macOS. It leverages the agentic architecture of Claude Code to perform non-coding knowledge work (file organization, data synthesis, document drafting). Users grant explicit access to specific folders: Cowork then analyzes the request, creates a multi-step execution plan, and completes the task. For example, it can organize 50+ receipts into a new Excel spreadsheet with calculated totals. The agent operates securely within an isolated virtual machine (VM) environment, delivering finished outputs directly to your local file system.
