IBM InstructLab

InstructLab is an open-source framework using Large-scale Alignment for chatBots (LAB) to enhance LLMs through community-driven data contributions.

IBM and Red Hat launched InstructLab to democratize LLM development via the LAB method. This taxonomy-driven approach allows developers to add new skills and knowledge to models like Granite or Mistral using small sets of human-written examples. The framework uses synthetic data generation to scale these inputs, reducing the reliance on massive human-annotated datasets. It effectively bridges the gap between proprietary model performance and open-source accessibility by enabling continuous, incremental model improvements.
