Memex

A hypothetical 1945 electromechanical desk device: Vannevar Bush's vision for a personal microfilm library using 'associative trails' (hyperlinks) to augment human memory.

Memex: a visionary 1945 concept by engineer Vannevar Bush (Director, OSRD) for an electromechanical desk. Bush proposed this 'mechanized private file and library' to combat information overload, storing an individual's lifetime of books and records on microfilm reels. The core innovation was 'associative indexing,' allowing the user to create and follow permanent, non-linear links—or 'trails'—between any two pieces of information, mimicking the human mind. Though never built, the Memex, detailed in his seminal essay 'As We May Think,' directly inspired the development of hypertext, personal computing, and the conceptual foundation for the World Wide Web.
