power electronics

Power electronics is the essential bridge between raw electrical energy and the precise voltage, current, and frequency required by modern hardware.

This field manages the conversion and control of electric power using solid-state electronics. It replaces bulky mechanical systems with high-speed semiconductor switches like Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN) to minimize energy loss. You find these systems everywhere: in the inverters that turn DC battery power into AC for Tesla motors, the rectifiers charging your smartphone, and the massive HVDC converters stabilizing the power grid. By operating at high switching frequencies (often exceeding 100 kHz), these devices achieve 95% to 99% efficiency while drastically reducing the footprint of thermal management hardware.
