VLA

The Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) is a premier centimeter-wavelength radio astronomy observatory located in central New Mexico.

The VLA consists of 27 independent antennas (each 25 meters in diameter) deployed in a Y-shaped configuration. By utilizing aperture synthesis and interferometry, the system achieves the resolution of a single telescope 36 kilometers wide. It operates across frequency bands from 1 to 50 GHz, providing sub-arcsecond resolution to map cosmic phenomena like black hole jets, protoplanetary disks, and neutral hydrogen gas. Recent upgrades to the WIDAR correlator have increased its sensitivity by a factor of ten, maintaining its status as a critical tool for global astrophysical research.
