Wine
Wine is a compatibility layer that runs Windows applications on POSIX-compliant operating systems like Linux, macOS, and BSD.
Wine (originally an acronym for Wine Is Not an Emulator) translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on the fly, eliminating the performance and memory penalties of traditional emulation. This architecture allows users to integrate applications like Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, or StarCraft directly into their desktop environment. The project supports over 29,000 applications and powers Valve's Proton, enabling thousands of Windows-based games to run natively on the Steam Deck.
