Hello, I'm Scott, a new member of this forum. I recently acquired a Sinclair QL with microdrives and external drives at a bargain price. I have experience with various retro systems, and the QL setup seems to be working, but I'm unsure how to use the drives and their switches. I'm wondering if I can format disks and transfer data using my Amiga. The QL's keyboard and power supply have been upgraded, which is a bonus. I'm eager to get the drives working and explore the QL's capabilities. If anyone can provide advice on using the external drives with the QL, I'd be grateful. I'm excited to be part of this community and look forward to connecting with other QL enthusiasts at upcoming events.

Hello, my name is Scott and I'm new to this forum. I recently attended the ZZAP LIVE! event in Kenilworth, where I had a great time. I also went to the Princethorpe radio rally the following day, where I found someone selling a Sinclair QL with microdrives and two external drives - a 3 1/4" and a 5 1/4". I managed to get this setup for £30, which seems like a bargain.
I have a collection of other retro systems as well, including a Spectrum +3, CDTV, CDi, Amiga 1200, Commodore Plus4, Atari 800XL, GameCube, Dreamcast, and modded Game Boy and Game Gear. So I'm quite familiar with vintage computing.
The QL setup I purchased seems to be working, as the 3 1/4" drive is spinning disks. However, I'm not sure how to use the drives or the switches on the back. I'm wondering if I'd be able to format disks and transfer data using my Amiga, for example.
One of the drives has an MGT board inside, which may be relevant. I've tried connecting the drives to the QL's serial ports, but I can't get them to work - I get "not found" errors when trying to access the flp1_ and flp2_ devices.
I did find a potential solution on Aminet, a package called "QDOS4amiga1" that might help me get the QL drives working with my Amiga. I'm eager to try that out.
The QL's keyboard and power supply also seem to have been upgraded, which is a nice bonus. I'm really pleased with this purchase and looking forward to getting the drives working and exploring the QL's capabilities.
If anyone has any advice on how to use these external drives with the QL, I'd be grateful. I'm particularly curious about the switches on the back of the drives and whether I can format disks and transfer data using my other retro systems. Any insight would be much appreciated as I dive into this new-to-me vintage computing platform.
Overall, I'm excited to be part of this community and learn more about the Sinclair QL. The upcoming Sinclair-focused ZZAP LIVE! event in November also has me eager to connect with other QL enthusiasts. I'm looking forward to many more adventures in retro computing!
