The iPhone 15 Pro is dropping this week, and I am sure that all of you have heard about the rumors that we might be getting a titanium body this time instead of the stainless steel and matte glass back we usually get.
If you have been using iPhones for a while, you will know this is a big deal as it is not just about the new look but about how the phone feels and lasts.
But let me ask you something: Why do we care so much about what our phones are made of? Why does it matter? If you have also had these questions since the rumors started popping up, read on.
A Brief History of Smartphone Materials
Do you remember the dreaded early days of smartphones when most of them were made of plastic? Yes, those were some truly dark times.
But there were a few reasons for this, mainly because they were lightweight, easy to produce, and kept the costs down. However, the major downside to smartphones with a plastic body was that they often felt cheap, and lets be honest, those scratches and cracks werent a good look.

Around this time, Aluminum made an entrance, giving smartphones a more premium look and feel, and phones were sturdier and had a sleek finish that felt good in the hand.
But, make no mistake, they werent perfect either, as they caused a lot of issues with the signal, and they could get pretty dinged up if you dropped them, and trust me, they werent cheap to repair.
After this, we had phones with glass backs enter the scene, and yes, they looked absolutely stunning, especially with those shiny, reflective finishes.
This was when wireless charging became a thing, but as many of us learned the hard way, one drop could cause a spiderweb of cracks.
And yes, they were massive fingerprint magnets, too.
