We can glance at a stranger and make an age assessment
within seconds. Our intrinsic Sherlock Holmes kicks in as we subconsciously notice skin tone, discoloration, hair color, lip fullness, then tally wrinkles and stamp an age to an individual. Americans spend more than
$14 billion
a year trying to influence that birthdate verdict to be a decade or two younger.
A similar age calculation happens over the phone. Just like sagging skin, the quality of your voice can reveal your age.
Were good at estimating a speakers age because of physiological changes that happen to all of us, says Ksenia Gnevsheva, PhD, a language researcher at Australian National University.
When researchers asked people to guess a persons age by looking at their photo vs. listening to their voice, the estimates were only four years apart.
People talk to someone over the phone and build up an image of what they look like, said Harriet Smith, an independent research fellow and one of the lead investigators in
the study
. We wanted to investigate how accurate this image is likely to be.
As baby boomers seek to remain employed longer than prior generations, sounding our best is as important as looking our best. Many companies hire or at least conduct early screenings with phone interviews. And unfortunately, age discrimination is a real thing. According to 2021
data
from the AARP, 78% of older workers claim to have seen or experienced workplace age discrimination.
It can be advantageous to keep our voices in good shape just like our minds and bodies.
The aging voicebox
The larynx, or voicebox, is a complicated region comprising some 37 muscles. It is considered part of the respiratory system, and when air passes out of the lungs and through the larynx, it vibrates the vocal cords producing sound. So not only do the larynx and vocal cords contribute to the vitality and tone of your voice, but your rib cage and diaphragm also assist.
