According to Jim Morrison lead singer of
The Doors
back in the late 60s and early 70s he once opined in one of their great songs
Five To One
No one here gets out alive
Later, after his death although a few believed he did not die in that bathtub in Paris in 1971 this became in 1980 the title of the biography of the lyricist, poet, and one of the greatest rock singers of all time.
Well, that may not be true anymore. Death may very well not be the end of you and you may find yourself being reanimated as a digital being. In fact, you could now say,
No one here gets out dead
And that's because of a combination of artificial intelligence ChatGPT and human grief and the almost unbearable pain of loss for many many people. For all the advances in medicine and technology in recent centuries, the finality of death has never been in dispute. But over the past few months, there has been a surge in the number of people sharing their experiences of using ChatGPT to help say not just goodbye to dead loved ones but to reanimate them, at least digitally.
People have given the last text messages sent or Facebook posts to the program and requested a response in the voice of the deceased. The result for the deceased was remarkably positive in that the responses were supportive and reassuring from the machine. It was not trying to be the reincarnation of the dead person but more a voice of support in difficult times or when the real memories of the dead return to provide comfort.
With the proliferation of social media, there have existed for some time digital memorials of people. But now with this latest artificial intelligence, the possibility has emerged for a two-way conversation with an AI bot impersonator. The digital memorials were places where loved ones could go to remember them and were real places of catharsis. They were technologically upgraded
memento mori
where normal human grief could still be expressed. But now it is possible that the deceased are not dead but online whenever you need them. This is a fundamental change to the concept of dying brought about by AI and raises very serious questions about the rights of the dead.
